Abstract:
This infomation was used in compiling Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology Map 162. It is a subset of the information contained in the Geologic Map of Nevada, 2007: U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 249.

This dataset of 2617 conodont sample locations represents conodont information compiled and studied by Anita G. Harris, USGS, emeritus. The samples were collected by many different researchers over many different years. The conodonts in the samples were all reviewed by Anita Harris at some point, and logged into her database. Many of these samples, their ages and locations have been published elsewhere in various formal and informal publications, but no comprehensive digital collection of this work has been published. The locations of the samples were taken from information provided by the collector to Anita Harris, and have not all been rechecked or verified for accuracy. Some samples are likely mislocated, and are annotated as such when this is discovered. This dataset includes valuable age and CAI information from the conodonts that is useful for geologic analysis of the rock units containing the samples.

Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to provide detailed biostratigraphic and CAI information about the rock units containing conodont samples. This information was utilized in the development of Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology Map 162.
Supplemental_Information:
Detailed explanation of the age codes used is provided in the accompanying document "Biostratigraphic age codes.doc". This shape file is in UTM, zone 11, NAD 27 projection. This information should be considered preliminary. It has not been edited or checked for completeness or accuracy.

The rock samples listed in this database were collected by many different researchers, shown in the "Collector" field. All of the conodonts extracted from these samples were studied by Anita G. Harris, USGS emeritus. The data was originally captured and organized into spreadsheets by Anita Harris. An Access database of her Nevada conodont samples was created by Elizabeth Crafford, who then edited the data set to conform to the database structure and field requirements, provided annotation of the fields, converted a portion of the database to a shape file, and provided location edits and notations to the shape file. GIS analysis of this data was conducted by Anita G. Harris and Elizabeth Crafford.

Additional information about most of these samples can be found in the E and R Report, from the U.S. Geological Survey where available, listed in the "EandRNO" field, and from the original collector by referencing the "FieldNo" information. The conodonts themselves are preserved at the USGS under the "USGSNo".

Process_Description:
Samples collected by many people were processed to extract conodonts. Anita Harris examined the conodonts and usually provided a detailed E and R Report of the faunas and the age of the samples to the collector. She recorded the information in this file in spreadsheets. Her Nevada conodont data was loaded into an Access database, with minor editing for consistency done by E. Crafford. A shape file was made from the .mdb file and locations of samples were modified as appropiate, described in the "DataEdit" field. No changes other than corrections of errors confirmed by A. Harris, and locations were made to the actual data.
