This shape file contains data used to identify geologic units that may provide a source for the generation of oil and gas resources in Nevada. This infomation was used in compiling Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology map 162. It is a subset of the information contained in the Geologic Map of Nevada, 2007: U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 249.
Purpose:
Small scale map presentation, 1:1,000,000 scale, of geologic units associated with oil and gas source rocks in Nevada.

This shape file contains data used in the development of source rock information for NBMG Map 162.

A number of stratigraphic units in Nevada have been mentioned as potential source rocks for petroleum. They were shown, by age, based on the formation names and map unit descriptors for the map units that represent or include the potential source rocks. Some of the units are more inclusive than the formations listed below. The outcrops of these units are shown collectively on the map.

Miocene(?) -- lower Humboldt Formation of Frerichs and Pekarek (1994) [outcrops in the Windermere Hills northeast of Wells]. Ts1 as shown by Coats (1987). Reference: Frerichs and Pekarek, 1994.

The field "FMATN" contains the geologic map symbol from the published County map which represents a combination of the unit age and rock description with the data being between two and five characters in length. Field "L_NAME" is a short description of the rock type taken from the County Report and does not include age information. These fields were completed as part of NBMG OFR 97-1 and have only been changed as described in the process steps. Where the unit value of a polygon has changed, or the polygon has been cut and reassigned to a different unit, the value of "L_NAME" no longer matches the GEOLOGICFM unit value. This is the case for about 10% of the polygons (about 4000 polygons have been edited.).The 'GEOLOGICFM' field is the regional geologic unit assigned to the polygon, interpreted for this work. 'STATEMAP' refers to the unit assigned to the polygon from the original State Geologic map by Stewart and Carlson, 1978. This field is incomplete and was used primarily to help reinterpretation of Mesozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. 'COUNTY' represents the name of the county geologic map from which the polygon originally came. This is not a one to one correlation with Nevada Counties. For example, Nye and Washoe counties are split into northern and southern maps, and Lyon, Douglas, and Ormsby (Carson) are all lumped together. 'BioAgeMax' and 'BioAgeMin' describe the polygon age based on fossil data, using a coding scheme described in 'Biostratigraphic Age Codes.doc. 'ModPoly' is a code indicating the status of editing for the polygon. See Detailed attribute description for a list of codes and meanings. 'Notes' describes conflicting data point issues for polygon that need to be addressed, and other issues relating to the geology of the polygon. 'REFS' are references to other data sources besides the original County Geologic map and the 1978 State Map that were used in reinterpreting the values assigned to the polygon. A complete list of these values and their full reference is given in the Explanatory Notes. 'Reviewed' is the date that the polygon was analyzed with respect to contained or adjacent point data and geologic interpretation.
